(AP) — An internal investigation shows that an inmate at a Florida jail was allowed to eat Chinese takeout and sit in a guard station after hours in exchange for helping guards with financial and legal matters.,The investigation by the Orange County Corrections Department found that Robert Potchen gave guards advice on their taxes, student loans and mortgages in exchange for special privileges like accessing the Internet.,Potchen had been serving a 15 year prison sentence for pulling a gun on his wife, but he was in the jail as he awaited a hearing on a probation violation.,The Orlando Sentinel reports that another inmate told investigators that Potchen had a romantic relationship with a female guard.,The five guards involved have resigned or retired from their posts.

A new state report shows that nearly 29,000 registered sex offenders and predators now reside in the state.,Orange County, home to Orlando, had the highest total number of sex offenders and predators in the state with 2,299.,Sex offenders and predators are people who have been convicted of certain sexual offenses.,Court designates certain offenders as sex “predators” if they are deemed an “extreme threat” to public safety because they have targeted children or engaged in physical violence against their victims.,Sex offenders and predators are required to register with the state.

The number of sex offenders and predators living in Florida has been rising steadily for more than a decade, according to a new report put together by legislative auditors.,The report issued late last week stated that nearly 29,000 registered sex offenders and predators now reside in the state.,That's an increase of 53 percent since 2005, when state legislators first ordered their auditors to review the state's efforts to keep an up-to-date registry of sex offenders.,Legislative auditors noted that the state's registry lists more than 73,000 sexual offenders and predators, but the majority of them do not live among the public in Florida.,Auditors stated that the typical registered sex offender in Florida was a white, middle-aged male: 75 percent of those on the registry were white, followed by African-Americans at 24 percent.

For the second time in the span of a little more than a week, internet outages involving different service providers have wreaked havoc across the country for people trying to do business or enjoy some entertainment.,In Northwest Montana, Spectrum customers were once again dealing with outages Friday and into Saturday.,As a result, the Inter Lake has been unable to accept customer service phone calls regarding delivery of the Saturday edition.,Acording to an Associated Press report Friday, CenturyLink said engineers identified a problem that left customers across the country without internet service and expected to restore it within hours.,The outages reported Thursday afternoon stretched from New York to California and even temporarily shut down phone services at the Idaho Department of Correction and knocked out 911 emergency call services in parts of western Washington state.
