Behavioral researcher and author Alfie Kohn likes to tell a joke that many small business owners can no doubt relate to:

An elderly man who lives near a school is regularly harassed by a group of students.,Leadership is not about imposing your will on others, it has more to do with understanding people,” says Dr. Steve Vargo, a business consultant with IDOC and author of Eye on Leadership, An Optometrist’s Game Plan For Creating A Motivated and Empowered Team.,Says Dan Ariely, professor of psychology and behavioral economics at the Fuqua School of Business: “The question for your staff should be, ‘Can I do one small thing to get better today?’,In other words, people who enjoy meetings are those who don’t like getting things done.,The key question for distinguishing a worthwhile meeting from a worthless one seems to be this: is it a “status-report” meeting so employees can tell each other things? read more

The last few years have been lean for New York Mets fans as the team tries to recreate the magic that led to an exciting – if not improbable – run to the National League pennant in 2015.,Being a Mets fan in Los Angeles is not so different from following the club from any other baseball city.,While I would love to have the TV tuned to SNY 24/7 to get my content fix, there is one part of being a fan in Los Angeles that can never be taken for granted – the time change.,There are at least three games at Dodger Stadium each year and every so often the team will head to Anaheim to take on the Los Angeles Angels.,I guess at the end of the day, it may actually be easier to be a Mets fan in Los Angeles than a Dodgers fan. read more

Head coach Jahn Tihanksy will lead the Naval Academy Varsity Offshore Sailing Team in defense of its championship at the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup, being held March 8 through 10.,Since its inception, over 900 athletes and coaches, racing on 115 intercollegiate sailing teams and representing 23 different universities, have competed in the Harbor Cup.,CRAB President Brad LaTour welcomed Grosvenor and Mitman Clarke to their first board meeting on January 15th and introduced them by saying, “We are exceptionally pleased to have added to the CRAB Board two wonderful people with incredibly extensive boating experience on Chesapeake Bay and a vast knowledge of sailboat racing that can be shared with CRAB’s volunteers and special guests.”,SCC NEWS: Sailing Club of the Chesapeake members gathered recently for the 59th annual Change of Watch dinner dance and saw the commodore’s flag passed from Ed Paglee to John “Woody” Doxey.,Sailing Club of the Chesapeake is entering its 75th year of existence and the annual dinner dance at the Hotel Annapolis recognizes the 2018 achievements in cruising, racing and volunteer activities.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — A proposed 6,000-seat arena would be booked 300 days a year, helping local hotels and other businesses, Athens civic leaders said.,The executive director of the existing events center called The Classic Center said an arena could generate more than 600 jobs and have a $33 million impact on the local economy.,The arena, adjacent to Athens-Clarke County's Multimodal Center and warehouses on Foundry Street, would be booked 300 days a year and fill up downtown hotel rooms, said Classic Center Executive Director Paul Cramer, the Athens newspaper reported.,The arena would be linked directly to The Classic Center, and through there "to that magic place we call downtown Athens," he said.,Concert promoters say an arena that size would also bring many major music acts to Athens, Cramer told the committee.

A new study by Kaitlin Wooley (Cornell University) and Ayelet Fishbach (University of Chicago) showed that job candidates frequently underestimate how much recruiters want to hear them say four magic words.,At the same time, job candidates tend to overestimate how much recruiters want to hear the following words:

It’s not that you shouldn’t indicate your ambition in an interview and highlight your achievements to date.,Employers consistently underestimate how much aspiring new employees want to hear that a company values intrinsic motivation and that the company provides meaningful work for its employees.,The researchers wrote this of job candidates and failed to realize others cared about intrinsic motivation as much as they did; therefore, they underestimated how much expressing that they valued intrinsic motivation mattered to others.”,Those that articulated that their jobs allowed them to create, solve problems, work in teams, coach, and do things they were passionate about, made an impression on me. read more

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles teachers' strike that sent thousands of shouting educators into downtown streets, paralyzing traffic during a rainstorm and leaving a half-million students in uncertainty, isn't the kind of publicity Mayor Eric Garcetti needed for his potential presidential campaign.,The Democratic mayor, who has said he will soon decide whether to enter the 2020 White House contest, would anchor his candidacy to the idea that local government is where things get done in America, in contrast to the turmoil and vast political divide in President Donald Trump's Washington.,But as a mayor, Garcetti faces numerous hurdles not shared with potential rivals like Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren or former Vice President Joe Biden, who are fixtures in the Washington establishment.,Other mayors considering White House bids have their own challenges but have more cushion than Garcetti - they are no longer in office.,Mitch Landrieu, who spent two terms leading New Orleans, gained national attention with his decision as a white mayor of a majority black city to remove high-profile Confederate monuments and arguing that the nation needs a frank discussion on race.

“It was close the entire game; it was just basically back-and-forth,” said Powhatan head coach Kristy Henderson, “but we held on at the end to win, did some good things down the stretch.”,Terry knocked down four three’s - which Henderson said the team needed - and she led the team in scoring on 14 points.,Powhatan featured a balanced scoring effort, with eight different players netting points against Louisa.,“Obviously she got plenty of them, but she’s a type of player that, if just let go, she could’ve scored 40 points on us,” Henderson said.,In that game, Salomonsky and Faith each scored 12 points, and senior Katie Henderson knocked down three three-pointers for nine points total.

It was anything but easy, and at times it seemed the Raptors were really going to lose to the Washington Wizards on Sunday, a game in which the Raptors led by 23 points in the second quarter.,The NFL's divisional round last weekend didn't quite live up to the hype, as only one of the games was close and exciting, but it leaves us with two championship games next Sunday that are must-watch games.,The Kansas City Chiefs will host the New England Patriots, while the New Orleans Saints will host the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game.,OVer in the NFC, it was the Rams winning the game thanks to their run offense and run defense, the last thing anybody expected.,The Saints have looked like the best team all season, and after falling behind 14-0 to the Eagles to start the game, scored 20 straight points and put an end to the Nick Foles magic.
