Comments Off on Govs fall to Huron after Evers’ strong fourth quarter

The Pierre T.F. Riggs Governors took on the Huron Tigers in an ESD matchup at the Huron Arena on Tuesday night.

Both teams played to a 16-16 tie after the first quarter. With 2:18 left to go in the second quarter, and with the Govs up 26-23, junior forward Garrett Stout, who was one of the leading scorers for the Govs at the time, committed his third foul of the game. With Stout of of the picture, the Tigers ended the half on a 10-2 run, including a rare four point play by junior forward Teegan Evers. The Tigers went into halftime with a 33-28 lead.

Both teams traded runs in the third quarter. The Tigers took a 46-38 lead into the fourth quarter. Senior forward Tanner Evers exploded in the fourth quarter for four three pointers to help expand the Tigers lead. The Tigers held on to win 71-54.

The Tigers were led by Teegan Evers, who had a game high 24 points. His brother Tanner had 23 points, including 17 points in the fourth quarter. For the Govs, Stout and junior center Grey Zabel each had 14 points. Senior guard Alec Miller had nine points, all of which were from long range.

The Tigers (9-6, no. 8 in Class AA) have beaten the Govs twice this season. The Govs (4-10. No. 14 in Class AA) have lost six straight games since beating Sturgis 55-53 in overtime at Riggs on Jan. 17. In the past six games, the Govs have lost by an average of 20 points. They will look to end that losing streak on Friday night when they host the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Rough Riders at Riggs Gymnasium in Pierre. Varsity action is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. CT. The last time the Govs and Rough Riders met on the hardwood was in the 2016 Class AA State Tournament.
